November Forecast: Monkeys!

24 08 2011

I know what you’re thinking.  You’re thinking, “Summer has been great, but what I’m really worried about is that come November, I’ll have nothing to do on Thursdays other than eat pumpkin pie that one time.”  Well, worry no more, dear reader.  Worry no more.

I just got the official word that my one-woman show will be making its third Chicago appearance.  And–I’m happy to report–that it will be at the newly renovated Stage 773!  Actually, I took a little hard-hat tour of the space today.  (The actual opening of the wonderful, refurbished space will be next month.)

So, pencil me in on your calendar, won’t you?  The monkeys and I (with special guests TBA) will be waiting for you each Thursday night in November (um, except for that one Thursday night….when we’ll be eating tofurkey).

Now, back to summer!

Only two and a half weeks till Philly!

25 08 2010

The monkeys have finally started unpacking from our Louisville trip and now I’m telling ‘em to get ready to tour again.

The Good, the Bad and the Monkey has three performances (click here for dates/times/address) at the Shubin Theatre as part of PHIT’s “Side of Sketch” in the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival.  Tickets can be purchased at the door or online by clicking here.

The Good, The Bad, and The Monkey
Singlehood, Dating, and the Search for Something Real

Amanda Rountree takes a hilarious–and at times, heartbreaking–look at the cycles of relationships and the myths that we tell ourselves about finding a soul mate…..using sock monkeys. This is certainly not the expected  one-woman show about being single or dating.  Rountree warmly invites the audience to come along on her own journey, playing herself for the entire show.  It’s the sock monkeys who take on the other characters in her life–friends, boyfriends, dates–bits of her own psyche.  Because the voices of the other “actors” are easily provided inside the heads of audience members, the viewers are gently wrapped up in this sincere and engaging world in a very amusing way.

“Rountree is amusingly unafraid…”  -Chicago Tribune

“Amanda’s energetic and light performance style is the real anchor of the show…her sense of comedic timing is in full display.”  -An Angry White Guy in Chicago

“Amanda Rountree is radiantly endearing…”  -Chicago Theatre Blog

The Good, the Bad, and the Monkey ~ In Philly!!

The monkeys and I are hittin’ the road again….east to Philadelphia!  No one in the cast has ever been to Philly before, so it’s all pretty exciting.  Also exciting is that we have not one, but three shows scheduled!  Please see below for the details.

Back from Louisville and heading to Philly!

21 08 2010

Taking The Good, the Bad, and the Monkey to my hometown was a success on all fronts!  I’m still so touched and overwhelmed by the number of people that came out to see my show.  There are about 140 seats in the lovely Bunbury Theatre and I was hoping to fill half of them.  So I was delightfully surprised when we were just a few seats shy of selling out last weekend!  I felt very good about the performance.

Since this is a one-woman show about being single (involving sock monkeys, no less), I recognize that some folks may not be exactly expecting great theatre.  Many, many folks came up to me after the show remarking with great surprise, “Wow. That was really good!  I mean, you’re really good!”* I am most flattered, however, when audience members tell me that they saw a lot of themselves in the show.  Not only is it a splendid co-validation (Cool, neither of us are crazy or alternately, Cool, we’re both crazy in the same way), it’s what I’m always after in my theatre–being awkwardly, vulnerably, unmistakably real, and connecting to that “real” in everyone else.  Isn’t that where true tragedy–and therefore comedy–reside?  Following the performance, the splendid folks at the Bunbury invited me back and I’ll definitely take them up on it.  Hooray!

Now, I’m getting my monkeys in a row for our three Philly shows next month!  I’ll perform the show multiple times in one weekend (and two will be on the same day)!  I’ve performed three or four ensemble shows in a row before–and even over thirty hours straight in an improv-a-thon (although admittedly, that particular situation ended with me on stage in a sombrero laughing and creating a dance to honor the bosom).  But performing my solo show multiple times in one weekend is something new to me.  It’s such an energetic and emotional journey to perform the show…I’ll have to make sure to take my vitamins when I’m in Philly.

*The monkeys insist that audience members who have high expectations will still enjoy the show.

Less than a week till Louisville!

8 08 2010

I’ve rehearsed with my monkeys, interviewed with Louisville’s weekly papers, and sent emails and updates galore to friends and family in Kentuckiana.   I’m super excited about my upcoming performance of my one-woman show in my hometown!

The performance is in the beautiful Bunbury Theatre in downtown Louisville this Saturday, August 14th at 8pm.  Click here to get your tickets!

Takin’ My Monkeys to Louisville

6 07 2010

My monkeys and I have loved performing in every city so far, but we’re particularly excited about our Louisville performance next month.  They’ve never been, but they’ve already heard me talking so much about it (they’re very good listeners, after all), that they’ve gotten pretty enthusiastic themselves.

I might have to drag them to some of my favorite restaurants in the city and maybe even around to some of my favorite spots.  But we’ll see how they behave.  Traveling with monkeys can be a bit of an adventure.  Mostly because they refuse to not go naked.  But also because people look at me funny when I talk to them.  Um, on second thought, maybe I’ll just keep them in their suitcase and save our dialoguing for the show.

Speaking of which, tickets are on sale now!  Hope you can make it!

Here’s everything you need to know.

Ticketing Details for my show in Louisville

16 06 2010

Yippie!  I just got the ticketing details for The Good, the Bad, and the Monkey at the Bunbury this August.  I am super excited that I’ll be taking this show to my hometown of Louisville, KY later this summer!  This show is a huge deal for me. It’s the most “me” thing I’ve ever done artistically, it’s the biggest project I’ve worked on, and it’s a creation I am very proud of. It would mean a lot to me if you came out to see it.

I created an original one-woman show last year. I had the absolute pleasure and good fortune of working with a remarkable director and last August, I took the show to Seattle, Bellingham, and Portland on the west coast for previews.  I then had a successful 8-week run in Chicago.  My next goal was to take it on tour.  I performed it (with my new ending!) in Austin, TX last month and am incredibly excited to announce that I’ll be taking this show to my hometown of Louisville, KY later this summer!

Countdown to LAFF!

27 04 2010

I am exactly one week away from my departure to Austin, Texas.  It will be my first time performing The Good, the Bad, and the Monkey since the show’s 2009 run here in Chicago.  It was refreshing (and comforting) to discover how much of the show I remember.  I suppose I should remember it….after all, I did write it and it’s a very personal piece.  Getting together with my brilliant director, Jen Ellison last week was also great.  We’ve changed the ending a bit and I’m bringing even more of myself to the show.

A couple of weeks ago, one of the festival producers down in Austin interviewed me for their podcast.  Here’s a link to it if you’d like to take a listen.
