If you’re intimidated by the prospect of speaking in front of an audience, you are not alone. You know that, right? I hope so. Knowing that is the first step in understanding one of the most helpful tips for public speaking: The people watching you in the audience are also afraid of speaking in front of others.
…Which means when you’re standing up there alone, every single person watching you and listening to you is on your side.
Audiences want you to succeed!
Every time I remind my storytelling students of this fact, I immediately see them relax.
Sometimes, our anxious brains will imagine the worst case scenario, and for public speaking, that scenario is that every person out there is judging us, just waiting for us to fail. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. In reality, our own fears, projections, and empathy make us all your biggest supporters in that moment.
Of course, I have other helpful public speaking tips. But after a decade of teaching students how to confidently speak to audiences in an open, engaging way, I’ve learned this tip is the best one to start with. Whether you are nervous to speak at a large business meeting or even a small gathering of family and friends, it’s beneficial to remember that everyone there is on your side.
If you’re ready to gain more confidence and skills with public-speaking in a super fun and supportive environment, I’d love to have you in one of my personal storytelling classes! I offer online sessions, in-person sessions, and even private coaching, if you prefer it.
My 8-week Online Personal Storytelling class started last week, but if you sign up now, you won’t be the only student who missed the first class!
I’m based in the suburbs just north of Atlanta and currently have these options in the Suwanee and Johns Creek areas.
2-hour Intro to Personal Storytelling workshop, Saturday, Feb. 21st, 2-4pm (The Art Center at Johns Creek)
8-week Share Your Story class, Mondays, March 9-May 4, 7-9pm (The Art Center at Johns Creek)
I travel for in-person workshops if your business or organization is interested in hiring me for a facilitation. You can also book a private group class or an individual public speaking coaching session, both online. Simply contact me here. I want to help you feel confident the next time you find yourself having to speak in front of an audience!
