Back when we were practicing “social distancing” during the pandemic, I offered all of my classes and workshops online. Although I returned to my in-person offerings quite a while ago, I still like to occasionally offer online options.
My 8-week Personal Storytelling class for adults is a very easy fit as an online course. I was delighted to find that for those among us who dread speaking in front of any size audience, taking this class from the comfort of your own home is a perfect fit. It helps alleviate a small bit of the nervousness and anxiety from the get-go.
Because this class focuses on teaching the skills for students to share a true experience that happened to them, students have the added comfort of already being an expert in whatever stories they choose to share.
Students always choose the subject matter of their own stories. As the instructor, the “homework” I assign each week is the method of sharing their true experience, not what kind of experiences. Some students even share the same experience every week, with the varied homework structures, because they just want to find the best way to tell that exact story. Other students share a different experience every week.
There are so many things I love about this class, but some of my top favorites are witnessing my students gain confidence in their public speaking skills, and seeing how personal stories connect all of us, no matter how vastly different we might seem at first.
The added benefit to having this class online, is that my students often come from all over. Although this class is offered from the Eastern Time Zone in North America, students who can share their stories in English can sign up from anywhere in the world (as long as the timing works for their schedule).
