I am very moved by the recent talk of the need for humans to feel that we belong. We are, after all, social creatures. To pretend that we are not discounts our biology.

It feels like we are still feeling the effects of the global pandemic. It also feels like we continue to experience the affects of technology and social media. What once seemed like something that would bring us together seems to have isolated everyone in dramatic ways.

I cannot help but see all of this through the lens of an improv and storytelling instructor. I’m very fortunate that my life is already filled with belonging because of improv and storytelling.

The world is a better place when more of us feel like we belong to a greater community. In the last couple of years, I’ve made it my goal to reach more people with my classes, hoping to spread connection, belonging, and community-building through improv and storytelling.

It’s a common thing to feel lonely, yet so many of us are embarrassed to admit it. This makes us feel even more isolated and lonely! Taking an improv or personal storytelling class might sound intimidating, but it is the perfect antidote to loneliness. When I teach these classes, I witness new friendships formed before my very eyes.

The internet tells us that it’s difficult for adults to form friendships. But don’t ask the Internet. Ask me. It is really easy for adults to make new friends in a personal storytelling class. It is really easy for adults to make new friends in an improv class.

My next storytelling class starts August 3rd.

My next improv class starts August 6th.
